Renaissance Illusion: Through The Fire

Na The Yardbirds, zochten Keith Relf en Jim McCarty hun toevlucht tot muziek die we ‘prog’ noemen, maar die zowel inhoudelijk als muzikaal de esoterische en spiritualistische toer opgaat. Zo werd Renaissance geboren. In dat kielzog volgde Illusion, maar tegen die tijd was Relf overleden. Een kwarteeuw later, achtte diezelfde McCarty de tijd rijp voor een album dat zou teruggrijpen naar toen en dus doopte hij de groep maar “Renaissance Illusion”  - ook omdat een groep nog altijd de podia afschuimde onder de naam Renaissance!

McCarty had alle zelfgepende nummers klaar, maar om de tijd van toen te herscheppen deed hij een beroep op de vrienden die ook deel uitmaakten van de twee vorige groepen: zangeres Jane Relf (zuster van), toetsenman John Hawken (ooit bij The Nashville Teens) en  bassist extraordinaire Loui Cennamo (The Herd, Steamhammer). Zo kwamen negen nummers in 2001 uit als ‘Through The Fire’, een werkstuk dat amper werd opgepikt en nu met twee bonustracks van dezelfde sessie opnieuw verkrijgbaar is bij Angel Air.
Ondertussen had McCarty soloplaten gemaakt en in een gesprek met Radio 68 noemt hij ‘Through The Fire’ dan ook ‘half solo, half groep’. ‘Half solo’, omdat hij alles schreef en de meeste nummers zingt, ‘half groep’ omdat hij naar eigen zeggen bij niet enkel het talent van zijn oude vrienden nodig had, maar ook hun vermogen om voor “chemistry” te zorgen. McCarty had zich ondertussen het boeddhisme eigen gemaakt en met Cennamo sfeermuziek uitgebracht onder de naam ‘Stairway’. De nieuwe plaat zou al die invloeden en ervaringen incorporeren. 

Het resultaat is een werkstuk dat ik liever spiritualistisch dan prog zou noemen, ook al vanwege de spirituele boodschap van McCarty’s teksten: het onevenwicht in de wereld, het mysterie van het leven (‘Mystery Of Being’), het belang van mensen met een goed hart (‘Good Heart’), de wijsheid van de leermeester zelf (‘Glorious One’) en kernelementen zoals karma en wedergeboorte (‘One More Turn Of the Wheel’, ‘Through the Fire’).
Muzikaal vindt de groep een mooi evenwicht tussen de sfeer die nodig is om zo’n spiritualistische plaat te creëren enerzijds en de noden van een progrockalbum anderzijds. MCarty zingt zelf de lof van Loui Cennamo en vooral van de klassiek geschoolde pianist Hawken, die een liedje met twee akkoorden tot een sfeervol lied ombouwde (‘One More Turn Of The Wheel’). ‘Good Heart’  en de twee bonussen bevatten zelfs de nodige beat. Hoeveel rockpotentieel bepaalde nummers bezitten, wordt bewezen door… The Yardbirds, die ‘Mystery Of Being’ een halve psychdraai gaven op hun album ‘Birdland”.

Following the demise of The Yardbirds, Keith Relf and JimMcCarty started a new band with an entirely new sound: Renaissance. Usually called ‘prog’, I prefer to call this the onset of a spiritual and esoteric musical path, one that McCarty would continue with Illusion after Relf’s untimely death. A quarter of a century later, Jim McCarty-the-drummer had developed his song-writing skills, learnt to play guitar and keyboards, immersed himself in Buddhism, released solo records  and written ‘mood music’ of a most esoteric kind with former (band) mate Loui Cennamo as ‘Stairway’. He had another dozen of songs ready, but felt like making another album in the Renaissance / illusion vein, so he called upon three (band) mates who had been quintessential to Renaissance and Illusion: singer Jane Relf, bassist extraordinaire Loui Cennamo end classically-trained pianist John Hawken. He didn’t just need their talent, but also the closeness that would create the much-need chemistry. The band was called ‘Renaissance Illusion’ – not only to take away any doubts, but also because a band named Renaissance was still active.  

The chemistry was there. Jane Relf’s voice was only used sparsely, McCarty singing most parts. In an interview with Radio 68, McCarty gladly acknowledges the input of Cennamo and Hawken, the latter having turned the two-chord  ‘One More Turn Of The Wheel’ into a real full-bodied piece of work lasting just a little under seven minutes.
McCarty told me he started from the rhythm,  the atmosphere created by the music underlining the meaning of the Buddhism-inspired lyrics about good-hearted fellow-men (‘Good Heart), the wise master (‘Glorious One’), the mystery of life and all being (‘The Mystery Of Being’), the imbalance of our world, but also the continuity of life through karma and rebirth through cleansing (‘Through The Fire’).   Thoughts to listen to attentively considering the state the world is in.

‘Through The Fire’ is a well-balanced album of a spiritual message woven around a rhythm-based, prog-inspired musical atmosphere with a fair amount of beat to it. In case you need any proof, just listen to... The Yardbirds’ version of ‘Mystery Of Being’ on their album ‘Birdland’

I quickly got charmed by this album, that went underground soon after its initial release in 2001 and is now re-released with two bonus tracks from the same sessions.
