JC and Angelina Grimshaw with the Acoustic Pretty Things

The Pretty Things gaven vorige december hun afscheidsconcert in Londen, dus waarom worden ze een paar maanden later in Brussel aangekondigd? Onder de noemer ‘akoestisch’ dan nog. Samen met een bij ons onbekend duo?

Dat zit zo. JC en Angelina Grimshaw zijn buren van Pretty Thing-guitarist Dick Taylor. Ze maken er een gewoonte van om op tijd en stond de ‘local’ op zijn kop te zetten met een akoestische set onversneden blues. Toen ze in 2018 een herdenking van het eerste Isle Of Wight-festival planden, haalde Taylor er die andere Pretty Things-pilaar bij: zanger Phil May. Het is die ongewone reïncarnatie van The Pretties die in ‘Le Sounds’ aantrad. De vraagtekens bleven bestaan, want dit was pas hun derde optreden als kwartet.

Van jazz tot psychedelic

Ons vertrouwen in Jonathan Todd en de Brussels Rhythm and Blues Club werd niet beschaamd. De eer om ons te overtuigen kwam toe aan JC Grimshaw (zang, gitaar, mandoline, harmonica) en zus Angelina (zang, gitaar), geruggensteund door Dick Taylor. Dat resulteerde in een dynamische reeks minder bekende tot traditionele bluesnummers (Statesboro Blues, Steady Roll en Trouble in Mind bijvoorbeeld), die met grote zeggingskracht, vakkundigheid en virtuositeit werden uitgerold. De Grimshaws zijn uitstekende instrumentalisten en goede zangers. Zo beschikt Angelina over een volumineuze stem van het type Memphis Minnie en Jo Ann Kelly. En Pretty Thing Dick Taylor dan? Die had simpelweg zijn elektrische (!) gitaar meegebracht. Het leek even alsof hij zich tevreden stelde met een ritmisch begeleidingsrolletje, maar binnen de kortste keren bediende hij ons met snijdende, harde interventies en inventieve solo’s, of de set nu eerder de jazzy (Big Bill Broonzy) dan wel de psychedelische toer opging (The Pretties zelf met “The Same Sun”).

Phil May

Toen kwam het moment waarop elke Pretty-fan zat te wachten: Phil May nam plaats achter de micro. De akoestische set met Taylor en Phil in de hoofdrol, vond ik altijd al het muzikaal mooiste moment van een Pretty Things-concert en met dit geroutineerde akoestische duo erbij kon het niet meer stuk. Na pure R&B uit de beginperiode (Big Boss Man; Honey, I Need; Judgment Day) en het hippiestukje “The Same Sun”, stond May het podium weer af aan het trio Grimshaw & Taylor. Zij trokken de scoop open met Dylan, een vergeten Stones-nummer (“Play With Fire”) of ook nog Doc Watson (“Blue Railroad Train”). Toen het weer de beurt was aan May, gaf die te kennen de inspanning niet aan te kunnen. Hij had amper twee dagen ervoor het ziekenhuis verlaten na een behandeling tegen longontsteking! Het was al een wonder dat hij er stond. Dat begreep het publiek ook door Mays excuses te bedelven onder een oprecht applaus.

Jammer, maar toen bewees het trio pas helemaal wat ze waard waren. De Grimshaws namen het voorziene repertoire over (Little Red Rooster, Can’t Be Satisfied), om daarna het optreden af te werken met een rootsy mix. Even hoopten we dat May alsnog zou aantreden voor het bisnummer “Not Fade Away”, maar het mocht niet zijn.

In elk geval bewezen broer en zus Grimshaw dat schatten op zolder echt bestaan. En Dick Taylor dat hij nog even alert en creatief op de planken staat als toen. Een spetterende bluesavond.

NB: De avond werd ingeleid door de house band “Jive” o.l.v. Eric Moens. Organisator Jonathan Todd speelde een deuntje of twee mee. Ze brachten covers die een breed terrein bestrijken, maar die de funk en rock van het einde van de jaren zestig / begin jaren zeventig gemeen hebben, variërend van Humble Pie over James Gang tot Fleetwood Mac, met uitsptappen naar athentieke blues (‘Mean Old Frisco’) en zelfs Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs. Although The Pretty Things gave their farewell gig at the O2 in London last December, they were now billed as “the acoustic Pretty Things with JC and Angelina Grimshaw” at Brussels jazz and R&B club Le Sounds. Some reincarnation? Well, not really. The electric five-piece Pretty Things format is really over. As it happens, Pretty Things co-founder Dick Taylor and the Grimshaws are neighbours and they have great fun playing together at their local. When the threesome planned a celebration of the first Isle Of Wight festival in 2018, Dick invited his lifelong Pretty Thing mate and vocalist Phil May. It is this quartet, or rather this double duo, that hit the stage in Brussels. For the third time only!
We were right in trusting the good taste of Jonathan Todd and his Brussels Rhythm and Blues Club, as JC Grimshaw and sister Angelina turned out to be great vocalists and instrumentalists, a real rootsy treasure throve. The duo treated us to classic blues tunes such as ‘Trouble in Mind’ and ‘Statesboro Blues’, with Dick Taylor playing a real mean guitar with inventive solos and carefully inserted interventions – for the most part on… electric (!) guitar. All Pretties fans were, of course, delighted to see Phil May stride to the mike and deliver the usual raw tunes from their earliest period – ‘Big Boss Man’ and ‘Honey, I Need’, for instance. The trio continued by opening their scope to Dylan, Doc Watson and The Stones, proving they can tackle anything from folk to ballad to semi-country to hard R&B. Regretfully, there was no second set with Phil May. He had only been discharged from hospital for pneumonia a few days earlier, making a full set impossible. The audience perfectly understood and answered Mays repeated apologies with applause. The trio showed they were up to the challenge, as the Grimshaws took over May’s role as if this was regular procedure. I’ve always thought the Pretties’ acoustic bluesy interval to be the better part of their concerts as a hard electric quintet, but this emergency version was up to standard to say the least. The trio finished the gig with another rootsy mix, with Dick Taylor proving what a great player he is, inventing jazzy, bluesy and psychedelic parts on the spot. Something tells me the Grimshaws will be back in Belgoshire.
Yes, a splendid time was had by all.
