Twee oprichters van The Blues Band die een duo-optreden verzorgen in een kleine Londense club, wat geeft dat? Vonken!

The Blues Band werd in 1979 opgericht als een tussendoortje, maar de groep hield het vol tot vorig jaar. Om maar te zeggen dat Paul Jones en Dave Kelly op elkaar ingespeeld zijn.
De duo-formule zelf is van een grote eenvoud. Dave Kelly start met een overbekende swinger, in casu ‘San Francisco Bay Blues’. Hij begeleidt zichzelf op gitaar, meestal slide, terwijl Jones zijn meesterschap met de mondharmonica toont. Dan is het de beurt aan Jones, die bekend werd als voorzanger van Manfred Mann. Om de sfeer erin te krijgen, pakt ook hij uit met een uptemponummer, ‘Without You’, de b-kant van de Manfred Mann-hit ‘5-4-3-2-1’. Hij verzorgt harmonicapartijen en Kelly doet zijn status van slidemeester alle eer aan. Bekende nummers [’Every Day I Have the Blues’], worden afgewisseld met eigen composities en het repertoire van The Blues Band, wat soms op hetzelfde neerkomt. Jones trekt de registers open richting jazz en vroege, vaak minder bekende R&B, denk aan Little Johnny Taylor [‘If You Love Me’] of Noah Lewis. Uiteraard mogen zijn harmonicahelden niet ontbreken, met Sonny Boy Williamson voorop.
Kelly waaiert uit richting soul [‘Dock of the Bay’] en country [Hank Williams]. Hij is verrassend goed bij stem.

Het aangename van zo’n optreden is niet enkel de beleving van meesterschap in een intieme sfeer, maar ook het showgehalte. Beiden amuseren zich en Jones is een geboren verteller. Dat Brian Jones hem harmonica leerde spelen, wordt in de mond van Paul Jones een spannend verhaal.  En als hij vraagt om mee te zingen, tja, dan doe je dat gewoon.

Ze eindigen met ‘It’s Got To Be the Blues’, maar ontsnappen niet aan een dubbele bis, te weten ‘5-4-3-2-1’ en ‘I Can’t Be Satisfied’ van Muddy Waters.

Waarom spelen die mannen nooit bij ons?

A duo gig by two founders of The Blues Band in a small London club, what’s that spell? M-A-G-I-C, Magic!

The Blues Band was formed in 1979 as a short-term project, but eventually continued till last year. In other words: over the decades, Paul Jones [vocals, harmonica] and Dave Kelly [vocals, slide guitar] morphed into one musical soul.

The duo formula as such is obvious and simple. Dave Kelly starts with a famous uptempo song - ‘San Francisco Bay Blues’ – accompanying himself on guitar, with Jones taking care of the harmonica parts. Next, they switch roles. To get the show going, Jones performs ‘Without You’ - the flip side of the 1964 Manfred Mann-hit ‘5-4-3-2-1’ - accompanying himself on harmonica with Kelly adding guitar. It’s as simple as that, but in the hands of slide master Kelly and harmonica ace Jones, the music is taken to a higher level.

Well known tunes like ’Every Day I Have the Blues’ are alternated with own compositions – both are excellent song-writers - and choice tracks from The Blues Band repertoire, such as ‘So Long’. Jones takes us to early R&B and harmonica territory with the likes of Little Johnny Taylor and Sony Boy Williamson, whereas Kelly shares his love for soul and country with Otis Redding [‘Dock of the Bay’] and Hank Williams.  

This gig is all about experiencing mastership in an intimate setting, with the masters themselves having fun and captivating the audience with their stories too. Particularly Paul Jones has a way of turning an anecdote into a thrilling event, e.g. when explaining how Brian Jones taught him to play the harmonica – and demonstrating it on stage.
