(1) Russ Ballard: The RB Experience, The Southern Maltings, Ware (UK), 7 april 2018

In “The RB Experience”, the initials “RB” stand for the man who threw the party in honour of his fans: Russ Ballard. In case your memory is failing: Russ Ballard is a singer, songwriter, guitarist and keyboard-player who  - aged sixteen - backed Britain’s superstar Adam Faith as a member of The Roulettes, went on to play with Unit 4+2 and co-founded Argent before developing a successful solo career. The reason for the party? Well, the 55th anniversary of The Roulettes.

 

As it happens, all four members of the definite line-up from 1963 are still with us and rocking:  Russ, John ‘Mod’ Rogan (bass), Peter Thorp (lead guitar) and Bob Henrit on drums. Henrit joined Russ in Unit 4+2 and Argent and later played with The Kinks. 

An  ad hoc group comprising friends of  Russ Ballard’s (with Henrit on drums) did the warming-up. Much to our joy, The Roulettes had invited some friends. First on stage was John Dalton, former bass-player with The Kinks who surprised us by… singing: “You Really Got Me” and “Sunny Afternoon” went down well. Next was Mike Berry – not a member of The Roulettes’ entourage, but an old acquaintance of Ballard’s – who rocked away on Fats Domino and Buddy Holly. You probably remember his later hit “Tribute To Buddy Holly”. 
The moment we had all waited for: all four Roulettes took the stage to perform their two minor hits: “Bad Cigarette” sung by Russ and “Bad Time” sung by The Mod. The foursome remained on stage to back the songwriter who wrote big chunks of Adam Faith’s and The Roulettes’ repertoire, not to mention Sandy Shaw’s and the tunes he sent into the Top Ten himself: Chris Andrews,  who had flown over from Germany to partake in the fun. He sang “The First Time” on stage for, well, the first time, and obliged with his monster hits” Yesterday Man” and “To Whom It Concerns”. Bob Bradbury of  glampunk band ‘Hello’ did Ballard’s “New York Groove”. 

After that, it was Russ Ballard Time. He wrote a lot for Argent, but equally placed hits with others, such as “I Believe in Miracles” for Colin Bluntstone or “Since You’ve Been Gone” (Rainbow). Russ Ballard has enough material to fill an entire evening, but gave his fan base the hits they wanted to hear – “Hold Your Head Up” and “God Gave Rock’n’Roll  To you “ -  to mention but two. 
The most unusual part of this wonderful evening was when Russ invited fans to share the stage with him – and two actually took the mike! It’s something I haven’t witnessed before from an artist of his stature. Anyway, John ‘Mod’ Rogan had us all laughing when he performed  his “Sausage Song” ; nothing to do with pop or rock whatsoever, but a great way to end the night. The final word was for Bob Henrit, who had played the drums all night: he read the names of the musicians of The Roulettes’ entourage who had passed away.  This In Memoriam was a most dignified and emotional moment that hit us all.   

Even with the music gone, the party at The Southern Maltings lasted another two hours as friends and fans from all over the UK and abroad (Belgium, Switzerland, Germany) shared memories, made discoveries and  toasted to rock’n’roll.  While you’re here, have a look there: http://www.russballardmusic.com/

NEDERLANDSE VERSIE: THE RB EXPERIENCE

“The RB Experience”, zo luidt de naam van het feestje dat RB oftewel Russ Ballard voor zijn fans organiseerde. Drie uur lang trakteerde deze zanger, componist, pianist en gitarist van o.m. Argent zijn fans op een informeel concert waarop hij enkele medemuzikanten had uitgenodigd: The Roulettes, Chris Andrews, gewezen Kinks-bassist John Dalton, Mike Berry, Chris White….

Elk feestje heeft een alibi dat als aanleiding dienst kan doen, in dit geval 55 jaar The Roulettes. Ze zijn hier vrij onbekend gebleven – misschien herinnert u zich nog de fantastische singles “The Long Cigarette” en “Bad Time” – maar als begeleiders van Adam Faith stonden ze in het Verenigd Koninkrijk  hoog aangeschreven. Na de breuk met Faith, gingen ze hun eigen weg. Russ Ballard verzorgde er vier jaar lang de zang en de gitaar- en klavierpartijen.  

Na een opwarming door een gelegenheidsgroep, kwam gewezen Kinks-bassist John Dalton op het podium om er, tot ieders verbazing, behoorlijke versies te zingen van “Sunny Afternoon” en “You Really Got me”. Direct ambiance, want over de miniplas kent iederéén de teksten van buiten. Hij wordt opgevolgd door zanger Mike Berry, die wij ons nog herinneren van zijn top 10-hit “Tribute To Buddy Holly”.  Berry was toen al een eeuwigheid actief in Engeland en brengt vanavond wat hij het beste doet: rock’n’roll. Toen was het tijd voor The Roulettes zelf: Russ Ballard, drummer Bob Henrit (Argent, The Kinks), Peter Thorp (lead) en John ‘Mod’ Rogan (bas). Ze speelden eerst hun bijna-hits en begeleidden toen de man die veel van hun materiaal schreef: Chris Andrews, die helemaal uit Duitsland was overgevlogen. The Roulettes en de gelegenheidsgroep bleven samen op het podium, want nu was het Russ Ballard Time: alle grote hits passeerden de revue, te beginnen met “Hold Your Head Up”, maar ook het schitterende “I Believe In Miracles”, waarmee Zombie Colin Bluntstone een hit scoorde. Ballard is iedereen dankbaar die van zijn muziek houdt en gaf de micro ook aan Bob Bradbury van ‘Hello’, die een hit scoorden met “New York Groove”.

Het laatste half uur reserveerde hij voor fans die met hem het podium wilden delen en dat heb ik nog niet veel artiesten van zijn niveau zien doen.

Een goed feestje draait niet enkel om muziek! Ballard overhandigde een cadeau aan een Zwitsers koppel dat was getrouwd op zijn composities.  John Rogan van The Roulettes, een eersteklas moppentapper,  sloot af met het hilarische ”Sausage Song”.  Het laatste woord, kwam niettemin drummer Bob Henrit toe, die waardig  afsloot met een In Memoriam aan alle muzikanten uit hun kring die het tijdelijke voor het eeuwige hebben verwisseld, waaronder de recent overleden Kinks-drummer Jim Rodford.
Daarna werd er, zoals het hoort, nog een paar uur gekletst, geouwehoerd en gedronken.

Een eenmalige, knappe gebeurtenis en een prachtig eerbetoon aan wie de muziek levend houdt: de fans. En kijk hier ook eens: http://www.russballardmusic.com
