EPs: Notes & List

1: NOTES

Edited as per 22 March 1999, SEE OTHER SECTION FOR PICTURES

1    Originals

Eight Belgian originals were released between 1964 and 1966. 'Original' here stands for BOTH a Belgian label and a Belgian sleeve.

2    Hybrids

The close collaboration between Decca Belgium and Decca France, however, resulted in a number of 'hybrids', i.e. EPs with a Belgian label but with the French sleeve used for the same release in France. The catalogue number is the same in both countries. A typical 'hybrid' is the 'Heart of Stone' EP, cat. no. 457.066

The exact number of hybrids is unknown. Some claim that all typically French EPs were equally pressed in Belgium and housed in French sleeves, but there is little evidence to support that theory unless Belgian pressings (i.e. Belgian labels) can actually be proved to exist.

The main reason for this uncertainty is that these hybrids are neglected by most French and Belgian collectors alike. Quite naturally, the French prefer their 100% French release, whereas the Belgians ignore the hybrids because of the French sleeve.

However, it should be borne in mind that Decca France and Decca Belgium produced dozens of these hybrids, such as the 25 singles and 19 LPs sets both titled “L'Age d'Or des Rolling Stones”. I, for one, add these to my Belgian collection.
